THE YOUNG PUNISHERS

Softball League

Notes from El Capitan, Jay Fabbio on the Softball Season

Team-

What a great game yesterday to close out our WHOI season, and continue our winning streak. With a 20-15 win we went on to win our 5th straight and in doing so we finished the season 5-1. We had contributions from everybody on the team, and it was a game that a performance like that was needed. We jumped out to an early 8-0 lead in the first inning only to watch it get erased in the 2nd inning, in the 3rd inning both teams scored 3 runs making it 11-11, with us being down 12-11 going into the 5th, we reclaimed the lead 17-12 after the 5th inning, the other team made it 17-15 in the 6th inning, but we added 3 more in the last inning to seal the victory 20-15. Yesterday’s game was a lot of fun, and though we won by 5 runs, we could have easily had lost by 5 runs, but I guess that’s why we go by the slogan “Winning is our Business”.

I just to thank everyone who was involved in playing this year, even it was for one game or all the games. It was a lot of fun, something I have said as well as many others, and I know I took away some great memories from this season. We made some big improvements from our first game where Cyndi threw a ball at someone’s face and we looked a bunch of people that had no idea what softball was or how to play, and making sure Cipperly had the glove for the right hand (literally) to winning 5 straight games scoring more than 20 in all but one of our 5 wins. Mike and Chris were staples to our corner infield positions, both playing 1st and 3rd. Ayme may have not been our best fielder but came through as a great pitcher for us, as did Holly in our earlier games. Toa was a great leadoff man and outfielder for us in some early games, and Bryan was our very own Jacoby, getting all infield hits. Sarah (when she showed) was great at the plate as well as good fielder where ever we put her, as was Robyn. Cyndi and Cipperly were good outfielder and catchers for us, and made great improvements in their batting this year. Dana was not only the man tracking our stats, score and making sure we knew when to bat, he also contributed to one of our games getting a couple hits when we needed batters. During all this we also met and made friends with some WHOI and MBL people that were important parts to our team, and people we will keep in touch with through softball and the FYP social events. There were many other people that played and did a great job for us for a game or two and hopefully they will be able to play more in the future (Kate). I know that even though the WHOI league is officially over ending our season, we haven’t played our last game this year. I will try to set up another game against some of the WHOI teams (hopefully a rematch of the only to beat us), and I know that as the FYP we are going to see if we can set up a challenge to other town chambers to play some softball games (an idea we have put out there and there seems to be some interest). We are also going to see about having an FYP softball game, more of a pickup game and fun that we can play against each other on a Saturday hopefully within the next month or so. Again thank you to everyone that has played with us, and lets look forward to whoever our next opponent is, a WHOI team or another town.
